An Encounter with Death
The Church is quite and almost empty
A lone coffin lies in the aisle
Before the altar awaiting
Gods sweet embrace and
Redemption from lifelong sins and toils
Outside spring fragrance, bird song and happiness
Inside wall to wall despair.
The faithful are gathered here to bury
One that close to them
A father, a brother and a friend.
All along the chapel walls,
Stations of the Cross
Look sternly down upon us
Faithfully showing us the way to
Salvation through our lord suffering
On that final judgment day
The family in black sits, silently praying
Oblivious to hope, reflecting on happier times.
As the priest delivers his sermon on the
Wisdom of Gods great design
To achieve everlasting life
We all have to die.
While I sit alone at the back
In wonder all the while.
