Inspired by a letter written by a soldier to his loved one on the eve of the battle of the Somme 1916.

Letter on eve of war

Its quite in the trenches tonight
As I put my pen to letter to write.
Don't be worried, your enemies are sleeping.
Jesus I wish I was dreaming,
dreaming of my love so far away.
Her golden hair, her smiling face.
That lovely face I can see this night,
As I wait for morn and approaching fight.

I'd heard the word the attack is on,
and over the top we go at dawn,
Over the top and into the fray.
No many of us will survive the day.
Into the smoke to attack their lines.
Their machine guns firing all the time.
Rat tat tat, machine guns barking
Boom, boom Cannons laughing.

The approaching conflict fills me with dread,
my last breath may come and I will be dead.
Dead on this battlefield, the War all around.
My Rifle by my side, 'forever unarmed'
But if it is the last thing I willl do.
I will swear my undying love for you.
So lord give me courage I may borrow,
and strength that I may live tomorrow.

I am a coward, that much is true,
but all I ever wanted was to be with you.
To hold your hand, to see your smiling face.
Oh God I wish we could embrace,
embrace awhile beneath the stars,
And kiss and love were time ours.
But times not ours, my love you see,
and tomorrow may be the end of me.

But maybe if god sees my heart is true,
then maybe he will let me come home to you.
And if he does, I will be home to stay.
And in you arms I will end my days.
I wish it were today..
I wish it were today....
